The Top Tip for this Tuesday is about using your freezer to help get air dry clay out of silicone molds.

Right now, using clay in molds to make ephemera for papercraft is a hot craze. There’s a few brands of air dry clay that dry to paper weight so they’re not too heavy to use on cards and other papercraft projects where normal air dry clay would be too heavy and could pull the paper over or tear it. I’ve used Paper Magiclay and Delight Air Dry Clay. Both are really good.

The problem is… when you go to take clay out of the silicone molds it often distorts. It twists or stretches or warps. The detail and shape can be lost. If you have this problem, and don’t have time to let it air-dry IN the mold because you’re making multiples, then I have a tip for you.

Use your freezer. Yep, you heard me right. Your freezer. Pop the mold (with the clay in it of course!) into your freezer for 10 minutes. Then pop your clay pieces out of the silicone and let them air dry. they come out easily and they don’t warp or twist as you take them out.

Easy peasy!!!
