Introducing Safe4Ewe dyes!

So excited to get to try out this brand new animal-safe, vegetable-based dye from American company Safe4Ewe! Please do read to the end where details about this dye are included.

I bought their Rainbow Sample Pack intending to use them to dye some merino wool I had finally handspun on my Ashford Kiwi 2 spinning wheel. My only attempt at dying yarn has been using RIT on a Furry Cowl I crocheted (find the FREE pattern HERE). That was a total disaster. The fact that this dye is vegetable-based and animal safe also intrigued me. It promised vibrant colour, even on dark wool.

It was apparently originally designed to make marking sheep easier – particularly coloured sheep … the ones that have black and brown on them. If you’ve ever worked with sheep, you know marking the white ones is easy as the spray dye shows up easily but the dye doesn’t show up well on coloured sheep. So this dye was originally designed for marking coloured sheep.

I figured if it showed up vibrantly on sheep, it would also make for vibrant yarn! (and I admit, I thought it might be fun to dye the dogs). But I digress….

How did my horse end up with a rainbow look? Well, Saphira, and I entered a fancy dress competition last Saturday. I had to use face paint on her body and it just would not come off. No matter what I did. It was so frustrating. (We won 1st place by the way. Hooray!)

Before anyone jumps on me for cultural appropriation, part of my ancestry is Choctaw and Saphira and I actually do horse archery. 🙂

So….. I had the bright (ie crazy) idea of trying the Safe4Ewe dye on her to cover the face paint remnants. I grabbed the sample pack just to put some patches on her where the facepaint was, but I got a bit too excited and ended up dyeing her whole body. Even her hooves.

Would I do it again? On the horse or on my merino wool? Scroll down for the answer and for details on this dye!

Want to know why I wouldn’t use this again? Want to know all the details about where to get this amaizng dye? Well… it’s April 1st so unfortuately those details are not available. This never happened (though the story of the fancy dress competition is real. 😊)
