Crochet the Waffle Stitch

A Drunk Dog Creative Stitch Tutorial

I have a secret…. I absolutely adore waffles. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the USA where they were a breakfast staple – served with just butter and maple syrup – or maybe it’s because I was introduced to Belgium Waffles when I moved to Australia – covered in decadent toppings like ice cream, chocolate, fruit, caramel, or whatever your imagination could conjure. Whatever the reason, I LOVE waffles and still make them some weekends with my trusty waffle iron as a tasty treat. But this blog isn’t about culinary delights… it’s about crafty goodness. And waffles are still just that … crafty goodness. I’m talking about the waffle stitch of course!

I think the waffle stitch is a very under utilised crochet stitch. I’m in the middle of making a big chunky throw pillow cover for my couch using this stitch, while at the same time designing some lovely dishcloths with slightly less chunky cotton yarn. I’ve also made waffle scarves with this stitch!

Just like the waffles I love to eat, the waffle stitch looks complicated to make, but it really isn’t! If you can do a double crochet (treble crochet for those of you who use UK crochet terms) and a front post double crochet (front post treble crochet in UK terms) then you can do the waffle stitch.

What’s that you said? You don’t know how to do a front post double crochet? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! You can find my tutorial for that stitche HERE. Head to that link, learn how to do that stitch, then come back here to learn how to use it to make waffly goodness. 🙂

When it comes to learning something new, I’ve figured out that there are two kinds of people – those who like to read the instructions, and those who like to see a video to learn how to do this. Which one are you? Well, guess what… I’ve got you both covered! Below you will find the YouTube video to demonstrate how to make the stitch AND the written instructions! Double waffley goodness!

Once you’ve mastered this stitch, have a look for patterns I’ve released using it here on the blog and/or over to my patterns on Ravelry! I’ll be releasing the Waffle Dishcloth pattern soon so keep an eye out for that. Crochet dishcloths are one of those ‘if you know you know’ things. If you don’t know, I’ll let you in on it…. they’re amazing! They are way better than any other dishcloth I’ve bought. I use them for kitchen and bathroom benches, for the dishes, for spills, and for, well anything really. They last a very long time (years in my case!) and can be washed in the washing machine when they get a little grubby and reused over and over again. Just don’t put them in the tumble dryer. Ask me how I know! Oops! They make fabulous gifts so you can let your friends in on the secret!

Anyways, I’m getting sidetracked here! Below is the video and written tutorial for crocheting the Waffle Stitch. Happy hooking everyone!
