The Suzette Stitch, sometimes called the Thicket Stitch, is the perfect stitch for making dishcloths, blankets or anything where you want some visual interest and some thickness but don’t want it to be overly complicated or a yarn eater. PRO DESIGN TIP:
When first undertaking a project think about yarn colour vs stitch choice. If the yarn has a variegated, striped, flecked or otherwise ‘busy’ colourway, then let the colour do the talking and choose simpler, flatter, and/or plainer stitches (like the Suzette Stitch). If the yarn is plain, then you can let the stitch do the talking and use more complicated or textured stitches like puffs, bobbles, front post double crochet, overlay, etc.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tc = treble crochet
Suzette Stitch (USA Terms):
Do a foundation chain – it can be any length as long as it is in EVEN numbers.
Row 1: sc into 2nd chain from hook, dc into SAME st, *sk next ch, sc and dc into next st, continue from * across to last st, sc only in last st, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: sc and dc into first st (the last sc from the previous row), sk next st (the dc from the previous row), sc and dc into next st (the sc from the previous row), *sk next st, sc and dc into next st, continue from * to last st, sc ONLY in last st, ch 1, turn
Row 3: repeat Row 2 until you’ve reached the desired length.
Suzette Stitch (UK Terms):
Do a foundation chain – it can be any length as long as it is in EVEN numbers.
