Butterflies, Dragonflies and Bees…oh my!

I’m very excited to share with you the pattern for the Entomology Wrap – a lovely rectangular shawl that features a host of beautiful critters – butterflies, dragonflies, bees, and baby dragonflies –  as well as leaves and divider rows made of the bead stitch. Each motif is presented as a separate section to give you creative control over your final creation.  You can make it as written or you can delete motifs, repeat motifs, and/or change their order to suit your needs.  This means you can also change the width of the shawl to suit your needs. 

This pattern is an intermediate pattern with the leaf motif providing a particular challenge as it is worked at a 90º angle to the rest of the wrap.  If you are an adventurous beginner, you might want to still give it a go. Options for fringe or tassels to finish the wrap off are included in the instructions.

This wrap was made with Granmanufaktur Lola (300g) for the main body and part of a Scheepjes Whirlette (100g) for the border and fringe/tassels. A Granmanufaktur Lola Solid (100g) would also work for the border and fringe/tassles. Both yarns are fingering weight yarns (1/super fine). Thicker yarns are not recommended as this will greatly affect the size and drape of the wrap. If you live in Australia, you can order the Lola and the Scheepjes yarns from Bellemae Yarns.

I also used my 3.5mm Furls Odyssey hook. These hooks are amazing and are designed to reduce RSI and help with arthritis. Bead Stitch

There are a number of ways to do bead stitches.  I have created a modified version here to suit this wrap. 

5 Wrap Bead Stitch:  First make a hdc, then wrap the yarn around the post of the stitch before finishing off as follows:  *yarn over, insert hook behind post of hdc from right to left, yarn over and pull up a loop, repeat from * 4 more times, yarn over and pull through all but last loop (2 loops left on hook), yarn over and pull through those two loops, sk next st, hdc in next st ready for next bead.

3 Wrap Bead Stitch: First make a hdc, then wrap the yarn around the post of the stitch before finishing off as follows:  *yarn over, insert hook behind post of hdc from right to left, yarn over and pull up a loop, repeat from * 2 more times, yarn over and pull through all but last loop (2 loops left on hook), yarn over and pull through those two loops, sk next st, hdc in next st ready for next bead.

If you need to save yarn, do the 5-wrap bead stitch the first and last time this motif is used and do the 3-wrap bead stitch the other times.

Bobble Stitch

Yarn over hook, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over and insert hook into stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops (4 loops on hook), yarn over and insert hook into stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops (5 loops on hook), yarn over and insert hook into stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (6 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 (does not count as a st).  Normally you would do a sc before and after the bobble but we need this bobble suspended or floating as it forms the head of the bee in the bee motif so we use a ch to ‘anchor’ it here.

Pattern Notes

The pattern is written in ‘motifs’.  These motifs are presented in the order they were used in the original wrap and in the test wraps.  You are welcome to customise this wrap to your own needs by deleting mofits, repeating motifs or changing their order.  The bead motif is designed as a border between each of the other motifs.  The bead motif has options for a 5-wrap bead or a 3-wrap bead.  It is a yarn eater stitch so you may want to use the 3-bead to save yarn.  I recommend if you do that, that you do a 5-wrap bead for the first and last bead motifs to give weight to the top and bottom of the wrap.  Please note, there is one anomaly to the bead-motif – if you crochet the leaf motif, you need to replace row 1 of the next bead motif with the row noted in the instructions for that motif. 

Keep in mind that making changes to the motifs and/or their order may affect the final width of your garment.  The motif widths below are listed as a guide to help you determine how your preferred order will affect your final size.  They are a guide only and are not to be taken as an exact measure since the final size is determined by the yarn you use, the hook you use and your tension as a hooker.

The Beginning

Fsc 251 sts (alternative: ch 252 sts, turn, sc in 2^nd st from hook and in each ch to end.)

Bead Motif (5-WRAP BEAD MOTIF)

R1:      ch 1 (does not count here or throughout motif), hdc in each st to end, turn. (251 sts)

R2:       ch 1, hdc in each of next 3 sts, bead stitch (5 wraps) till 4 sts from end, hdc in each of the remaining 4 sts, turn. (122 beads and 7 hdc)

R3:       ch 1, hdc in each st to end, turn. (251 sts)

Butterfly Motif

R2:       ch 3, dc in each of next 2 sts, *ch 5, sk 5 sts, dc in each of next 5 sts, repeat from * 24 more times, ch 5, sk 5, dc in each of last 3 sts, turn.

R3:       repeat Row 2

R4:       ch 3, dc in next st, *dc-inc in next st, ch 1, sk ch space, dc into 3^rd (middle) stitch 3 rows below while encompassing the 2 chains within the st, ch 1, sk ch space, dc-inc into next dc, dc into each of the next 3 sts, repeat from * 24 more times, dc-inc in next st, dc in each of the last 2 sts, turn.  [SEE PHOTO]

R5:       ch 3, dc in each st and ch space to end, turn.

NOTE:  If you need to save yarn, you can do 3 wraps on each ‘bead stitch’ (instead of 5) in the dividers between sections but do 5 wraps on the first and last section on the wrap.

Dragonfly Motif

R1:       ch 3 (counts as first st here and throughout section), dc in each st to end, turn.

R2:      ch 3, dc in next 12 sts, *ch 2, sk 1, dc in each of next 16 sts,, repeat from * 13 more times, turn.

R3:      ch 3, dc in each of next 12 sts, *ch 8, sk next 9 sts [the ch2 space counts as 1 st], dc in each of next 8 sts, repeat from * 13 more times, dc in each st to end, turn.

R4:      ch 3, dc in each of next 8 sts, * dc-inc in next st, ch 3, sc into ch sp from Row 2 encompassing the chains from Rows 2 and 3 inside the stitch [just like you did in the Butterfly Motif], ch 3, sk chain space, dc-inc in next dc, dc in each of next 6 sts, repeat from * 13 more times, dc in each st to end, turn.

R5:      ch 3, dc in each of the next 12 sts, *3 dc in ch space, ch 1, sk 1, 3 dc in next ch space, dc in each of next 10 sts, repeat from * 13 more times, dc in each st to end, turn.

R6:      ch 3, *dc in each dc to ch space, ch 1, sk 1, repeat from * 13 more times, dc in each st to end, turn.

R7-8:   Repeat Row 6.

R9:      ch 3, dc in each stitch to end, turn.

R1:      ch 1, sc in each of the next 5 hdc, turn.

R2:      ch 1, sc in each of the next 5 sc, turn.

R3-11:   Repeat Row 2.

Leaves

R1:         ch 3 (count as dc here and throughout), dc in side of sc from Base Row 10, ch 1, skip side of Base Row 9, 3 dc in side of sc from Base Row 8, ch 1, skip side of Base Row 7, dc-dec in side of Base Rows 6 and 5, dc in side of Base Row 4, dc-dec in side of Base Rows 3 and 2, ch 1, skip side of Base Row 1, skip next hdc from Bead Motif, slst into next 3 hdc from bead motif, turn. R2:         ch 1, 1 dc-dec over next 3 sts [this is similar to a normal dc-dec but now you do it over 3 sts], ch 1, dc-inc in next st, 1dc in next st, dc-inc in next st, ch 1, dc in each of next 2 sts, turn.

R2:       ch 1, hdc in each of the first 8 sts, *ch 5, sk 4 sts, 5-bob, ch 5, sk 4 sts, hdc in each of the next 6 sts, repeat from * 15 more times (16 bees), hdc in each of the next 3 sts, turn.

R3:       ch 1, hdc in each of the first 8 sts, *hdc-inc in next st, 3 sc in the ch sp, ch 1, sk 1, 3 sc in the ch sp, hdc-inc in the next st, hdc in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * 15 more times, hdc in each of the next 3 sts, turn.

R4:       ch 1, hdc in each of the first 11 sts, *ch 3, sk 3, hdc in each of the next 12 sts, repeat from * 15 more times, turn.

R5:       ch 1, hdc in each of the first 11 sts, *hdc-inc in the next st, ch 1, sk ch3 space, hdc-inc in the next st, hdc in each of the next 10 sts, repeat from * 15 more times, hdc in each of the next st, turn.

Join yarn in any corner of the shawl with right side facing you.

R1:       ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout = alternatively do a standing dc), *dc in either each st or edge row space [depending on which edge you are working along] to next corner.  In corner space (dc, ch 2, dc) [corner made], repeat from * along next 3 edges then join with slst in 3^rd chain of starting chain), do not turn.

R2:       ch 3, dc in each st to next corner, (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner sp, repeat from * around then join with slst in 3^rd ch of starting chain), do not turn.

R3:       ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in each st to next corner, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp, repeat from * around then join to starting sc with an invisible join [or slst if you prefer].

Fasten off.

Optional Fringe

Cut yarn in 40cm lengths.  You will need two pieces for each stitch along the short edges of the wrap.

Holding two pieces together, fold the strings in half.

Insert crochet hook into stitch, pull the strings through stitch then yarn over and pull the ends through the loop. 

Tighten by hand to secure knot. 

Repeat for each stitch on the short edges.

Optional Tassles

You may choose to use tassles instead of fringe.  If so, make tassles using your preferred method.

Repeat R3 of the border a second time.  Fasten off using invisible join.  

Join tassles into the corners of the wrap.
