Spiral Beanie

This clever little unisex beanie looks like it has been knitted but it is crocheted! The trick is to work in the back loop only using a half double crochet (half treble crochet in UK terms) stitch. The beanie is warm and stretchy (depending on the yarn you use of course) and is one size fits most. Though, if your head is larger or smaller than ‘most’, you can easily customise the pattern to fit your needs.

The free pattern below is in USA terms. If you want a pdf of the pattern, free of ads, and in your choice of USA or UK terms, then please visit my Ravelry Shop HERE.

Instructions

The hat is made in a spiral, working in the back loop only of all stitches.  I highly recommend using a stitch marker to mark the start of each round, moving it up each time.  It is very easy to lose your place when working in a spiral.

Beginning: Make a magic circle.

R1: 8 hdc in circle, do not join, pull circle closed.

R2: 2 hdc (blo) in each st of round (16)

R3: *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * to end of round (24)

R4: *hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st, repeat from * to end of round.  (32)

R5:  *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * to end of round.  (40)

R6: *hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, repeat from * to end of round. (48)

R7:  *hdc in next 5 sts, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * to end of round. (56)

R8:  *hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, repeat from * to end of round. (64)

[for a wider fit, continue to increase rounds until desired width is achieved. Then go to R9 below.]

R9:  hdc in each st to end of round.

Repeat R9 until hat measures 18cm from crown to brim [or desired length to fit your needs.]

EDGING:

R1: ch 2, dc in each st around, slst to first dc of round.

R2: ch 1, *fpdc around each of next 2 sts, bpdc around each of next 2 sts, repeat from * to end of round, slst to first fpdc of round.

R3-5:  repeat R2.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Make pom-pom and secure to the top of beanie.

Finished!
